Well this has stirred the pot a bit...

I'm the one selling this - but actually I also agree with Harvey a bit. But at the same time, there is something endearing about it too. This is really a subjective one for sure. The frame fits me as a race bike, I was almost tempted to adopt it myself, it is very quirky fun for the price of a new Somma frame - think about that one for a bit!

So the PR is probably good for my cause of selling it. I think it is swell that folks chat about stuff a bit. There is no question that looks and "coolness" account for a chunk of the value on vintage items. I can appreciate, though, folks trying to keep the list civil and polite. But some healthy discourse never hurts either. We're talking about bikes here, not each others spouses and partners. Just my two cents.

Howdy Mike, Harvey,

Well, to present the other side of the coin, I rather like the keyholes in the lugs. It's nice to see lug cut-outs that differ from the card suit standard set by the Italians. The fork crown lug is also a nice departure, too. Were it my size, I'd be interested.

Cheers,

we just put a Hetchins keyhole lug pattern frame/fork on ebay - lots of patina but really really cool.  It is 55ct and a bit over 56cm cc top tube.

It is from 1980's and according to the Hetchins org website, it is a pre-Bob Jackson example.  The frame/fork, is set at $645 with buy-it-now.

Mike - My only Hetchins is from the 70's, and a "modern" Italia Spyder. I don't know much about the marque, but the one at auction saddens me a bit. Somehow, the lug slots/holes, the "keyhole" effect, just read funny to me. They don't seem to flow with the shorelines or shapes of the lugs. It's particularly true for those on the sides of the head lugs.  Of course, this is just my esthetic opinion, just as some folks prefer brunettes to blondes. Has nothing to do with performance, but that and the fork just don't have coherence for me.

Good luck with finding her a new home; I'm sure that someone with different preferences will love the bike.
