Even if you don't care about the bearings you want to support the crank as the flex softens the blow needed to get the cotter moving. The minimum solution is a 2lbs (or bigger) hammer to support the crank from below, but putting the axle in a big vise or balancing the crank on a short piece of thick tubing resting on a solid floor works a lot better.
