Since French, English and Italian hub threads are so close in diameter, yet different to a degree, the best way to check threading is with a guage. This because it can better "guage" the thread pitch by spanning a full 8-10 threads, unlike a lockring.

Get yourself a British BB cup and a regular, 1mm-pitch axle (i.e., not Campy).

The BB cup @24tpi will properly guage English/Italian threading on the hub. It helps to hold the mating (or non-mating) parts up to a light or window, to see the full "engagement".

The axle, OTOH, will properly guage the finer thread pitch of a French hub, as it is 25.4tpi.

I've tried threading on a french freewheel to determine hub threading, but sometimes it actually threads right on to an English hub, especially if one has possibly been forced on in the past.
