be sure to put spacers in the dropouts if you pull any wheels off. And, you will need to have something in the box to hold the bottom / boom / tube up and level, or else the captains chainrings are subject to damage.
Fedex ground is one solution. A couple years back it was about $120 to send a tandem box, with tandem inside, from Madison Wisconsin out to the Seattle area.
