The eccentric didn't have enough throw to adjust properly for the odd-number rings; the boom tube length had been set for evens. Really. Moral: if you've got even, stay with even. And vice versa. 2) Sad as it might sound to break up the twins, I can't think of a reason one of these might not work as a single chainring on an old-guy town bike, for someone of comparative youth like me (65). If memory serves, the middle ring on my commmuter, the one I'm in 85% or more of the time, is a 38 or so - and I'm getting older by the day.
