Subject: [CR] Universal 61 pivot color

I have looked in the archives, but have not found any answers.

Some Universal 61's have blue pivots and blue paint in the stamped "Universal Mod. 61" on the caliper arm. Others have red. I recently received one of each. The blue one has a little notch cut out of each pivot that takes a washer with a matching tooth. The red one does not have this feature. The finish is not great on either one, but when I polished with Simichrome the blue responded better.

Is one older than the other? Did Universal work quietly to keep incrementally improving their brakes, or did they work quietly to make them cheaper? Is there another explanation? Are there other differences?

I can't speak to performance because they are just sitting on my workbench.

What about the Universal centerpulls that just say Universal? They look like the 61's, although the finish may be worse. Are they a lower model?

I know it's trivia, but I am curious
