Subject: [CR] Gear Cable Housing Finishing

Dear All

Can anyone tell me the best way to finish gear cable housing for 70's nuovo record gears? I did a rudimentary search of the archive, but couldn't immediately see this addressed.

I have been using the modern skinny (4mm?) housing, but this seems to be smaller than the stops on the chainstay and on the rear mech. Also, if I apply too much shifting force, the housing easily deforms and soon splits where it enters the chainstay stop. Clearly I need ferrules on the ends of the housing to prevent this, but the usual plastic ferrules are too big to fit in the chainstay/mech stops. I know it is possible (or used to be possible) to buy thicker gear cable housing (5mm?). This would probably be the right diameter for the stops - but this woud still leave no room for a ferrule at the ends. Can anyone suggest the best way to do this please.

Thanks in advance
