Quoth JBZ:

"It would seem likely that other frames had phosphate and chromate treatments".

And I offer in testament as to the perspicacity of said supposition those bicycles once imported from Sweden under the Crescent MCB label wherein their 1970's era literature proudly proclaimed that their finish color paint scheme was rendered over a rust inhibiting Zinc phosphate primer base. As a former resident of the "Frozen Flatlands" of South Dakota, I came to perhaps better appreciate such preparations than I did previously when living out on the West Coast, because as Harry stated in referencing Neil Young, "rust never sleeps". And with regard to Mr. Travis' question as to bicycles in the "On Topic" era which were "...the beneficiaries of serious anti-corrosion treatment ... besides the use of stainless steel, and titanium", I would reluctantly add to that list the use of wood, aluminum, carbon fiber, and even plastic as materials from which framesets were once constructed.
