Ha! Yes, by racing bike standards they are boat anchors... But actually these models were made by the same folks who made the filet brazed (bronze welded or what ever) Paramount tandems. These are not the same bikes as the flash welded really really heavy Varsity, etc.

My point was that for a time capsule condition piece of history, $400. is really not that much money.

Had no idea these things had value -- see them at tag sales and goodwill stores for $25 all the time -- Maybe not as perfect as this example, but usually in VG shape because the original owner hit a 1% grade for the first time and never rode it again. But seriously - what is it about this particular Schwinn boat anchor that makes it valuable? I am sure all the list members see these dinosaurs lumbering around in tag sales -- if the value is so high, why are we not scooping them up and turning them over for a profit margin of 800 - 1000 percent?

Condition

Hi Joe,

I priced my 1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer based upon actual personal past sales results from eBay.

I sold a pristine Super Sport in June 2005 for $380.00, and a Sports Tourer in much worse condition and with some non-original parts in October 2006 for $300.00.

Based upon this experience, I priced the recent eBay Sports Tourer at $400.00. Granted things have changed, most notable, the economy, but at $400 the price shouldn't be that unreasonable nor out of reach for most collectors.

Thanks for your comments!

There is an interesting price point for collector items where the price of certain items reaches a crossover point with the original price. Eventually I suppose anything that is decent and survives reaches this point due to inflation. So far this only occurs with bicycles from the 1970's that have very strong collector appeal. The avidly sought ones do, not just Masis and Cinellis, but PX10s and Raleigh Pros also. Many custom bikes have not made it either due to the high initial cost and relatively lower demand. A lot more people set their sights on a Raleigh Pro in the day than a Bruce Gordon. Interesting to see if the prosaic Sports Tourer climbs on this podium with the Paramount!
