Subject: [CR] Star bicycles

Hi--

Back in the mid-seventies there were quite a few Star bicycles around the Twin Cities. I used to sell them with my friend Walt Huemmer, who now works at Quality Bicycle Products. The following comes from him, whose memory is better than mine. They were made by Miyata and were the exclusive house brand of Campus Bikeways, one of several businesses (including a stereo shop, Great Sound) owned by entrepreneur Gary Smoliak.

There were two models, the DX-1 and DX-2. Who knows what the DX was for...probably nothing. Anyway, Campus Bikeways ran an ad in the Minnesota Daily (University of Minnesota newspaper) showing a young woman in bed with a bicycle with the caption, "Make it with a Star." Needless to say, Walt remembers, the ad aroused the ire of several female customers; he doesn't remember if they bought bikes.

The Star, with middle of the road Shimano, was reliable, and a good value for the time. I have several Star head badges in my collection, retrieved from alley bikes.

Walt thinks that if there are/were Stars around the NOW stickers, they were probably excess or closeout inventory bought after Campus Bikeways went out of business.
