Chas.

I'm guess I'm not sure what you are after. There is no such thing as "Columbus SL Competition" tubing as far as I know. The answer to your question is "don't believe everything you read, especially in advertising or promotional catalogs.

What you probably have is a Columbus KL tubing frame. Is there some other question you have? Call it what you want; but the official name for Columbus tubes with the specs. you quoted is" KL". Nothing else.

Hi John,

What I wanted to find out, what is "Columbus SL Competition" tubing if there ever was such a thing, or was it catalog hype?

I have a 1984 Gitane Team Pro (replica) frame. The 1984 Gitane catalog lists the tubing as "Columbus SL Competition".

http://www.gitaneusa.com/images/catalog/1984/Page_08.jpg

The Columbus KL thread goes back to specs published on the Desperado Cycles website:

http://desperadocycles.com/Lowdown_On_Tubing.html

Scroll down to table 4

There are 2 different listings for "Columbus SL" tubing. The top one is probably a typo and should be "Columbus KL". Note, there are several other "typos" in that table.

Brian Baylis suggested that the lighter weight specs were actually those for KL tubing. That's where things got off track.

I have several same size Columbus SL frames. The Gitane frame "feels" much lighter and the tubes visible in the BB are thinner and appear to be silver brazed. It's more like a Reynolds 753 frame.

It would be nice to know what kind of tubing the 84 Gitane Team Pro frame was made of.
