Canadian Cycling Magazine (cyclingmagazine.ca) ran an excellent interview/article on Jocelyn Lovell in its October &November 2010 issue.

Jocelyn Lovell is probably not well known outside North America because that is where he did most of his racing.  However, he may be remembered more widely for his successes in the Commonwealth Games.  He did have a short spell as a pro in Holland - to quote from the article:

"I went to turn pro. But once I looked at all the drugs and the living out of a bag all your life I realized they had beaten me."  I think "they" refers to the small-minded Canadian officials who suspended him for 6 months for a trivial misdemeanor, so that he would miss the Commonwealth Games, leading him to think his best option was to go to Europe and turn pro.

Another interesting bit from the same article was that he teamed up with Gord Singleton for the tandem sprint in the 1978 Commonwealth Games.  They won.  That must have been a sight to behold.  Lovell won two other golds at the same games.  The published article contains some excellent photos not shown here:

Ive never heard of Jocelyn, but reading his story has humbled me. There cant be nmany athletes with that sort of stroy to tell and I think it should go to wider audiances. Illsee what I can do, unless ther are any objections. A true hero. Barrie cCarter Roundham, UK
