The late Valentino/Gran Sport shifters with the knurled knob made their first appearance in the 1971 Catalog 16 supplement AFAIK. The ones in your photo are different from the ones I'm used to seeing though. Usually the aluminum knob has a prominent nipple; yours are smooth. Maybe that nipple was deemed dangerous by the CPSC and had to be removed in 1977?

I don't know that I've noticed this model with the serrated / knurled binders before. The ones I've used have had the D-ring screw.
