Rick - Any cross configuration should be OK, but I'm with Robert, I'd never do a radial spoking. I have seen a few cases where a segment of the flange tore out in a radially spoked wheel. This would likely happen if the hole was deeply gouged by the inside radius of the spoke elbow, and the wheel was then laced with a different orientation, allowing a crack to form and propagate.
It's all speculation, of course.
The thing is - back in the day, I very rarely saw radially - spoked wheels. I personally cannot stand the way they feel atmo. But that's just me.
Again, I have seen a hub flange that tore out. Can't imagine that would be a good thing.
