Re: {Classic Rendezvous} Campag HF Hubs vs. Spoke X-ings ?

(Example: Racing:Wayne Stetina)

John Businer replied:

<<In fact, I'm looking at a set of LF (LF= Large Flange, SF= Small flange) 36h, 4x wheels laced to 700c Fiamme red label sprint tubular rims. Guess what? The spokes overlap adjacent spoke heads. I haven't seen your complete wheel, but please check again.>>

<<FWIW, any time a spoke touches/crosses an adjacent spoke head, you are asking for trouble, IMO. Not only does it introduce an unnecessary stress point on the spoke, but also on the hub flange, not to mention a source of noise, clicking, etc.>>

I have several Campagnolo large flange hubs which are laced 4x and there is no spoke overlap, however, John did not say he was looking at Campagnolo large flange hubs, so they could have been Normandy or..(?) and not all large flange hubs have the same flange diameter.

With that said, I have a Shimano 105 cassette hub (36o and 4x/2x) which I built in 1998 and still ride - never had a problem after ~5k miles.

As Mr. Sachs points out: "YMMV"
