Interesting! DuPont Imron is still in wide use hereabouts as are the many similar makeup, catalyzed polyurethane enamels, including all the competitors of Imron from the other major paint companies. We have had them all and it is hard to have favorites from the consumer end, as they all seem to be excellent advanced products.
As you say, Jim, the application is key.
Imron's chief limitation from my viewpoint seems to be the color choice (or lack thereof) the Imron metallic reds & oranges are weak and milky..But their blues and greens are rich!
The Sikkens system seems to offer vastly more color options and locally they will deliver custom brewed hues for less $.
Powder coat has been discussed a bunch here on this forum in the past, but I will reiterate our experience... With powder coat you get a tough surface, thicker coverage (which is both good & bad!) , but once the surface is broken (chips, scratches) quicker degradation of the metal below. There can be no zinc content primer to resist rust ... Used to be only dull monochromes but there have been vast improvements in colors and techniques. In the end, you are hugely dependent on the skills of the "painter" ("Powderer?")
