The comment in this thread that "Pegoretti is making their Lugino a production frame this year, last year it was a limited edition, something about not being able to find enough lugs. Price a mere 2400$" is only partially correct. It has always been a 'production' frame, although the availabilty was limited.

The Luigino was offered as a small production run of about 30) framesets in 2002, a frame which was named after Dario's mentor and built 'in the old style' with modern tubing, handcut lugs, and some NOS Campy parts for $1600. This year, 2003, it was offered as a Pista frame, with Dario's new two-piece fork crown but with the same NOS/modern parts-tubing mix. It could be ordered in a road version (with brakes, road dropouts, etc) for $1750-1900, depending on how good you and your dealer got along. (The price increase was primarily because of the new fork and more intricate paint job.) The 2003 version also offered a much nicer version of the white paint, red panels with black edging which is now being offered in a more garish version on the so-called 'new Masi.'

There is an across-the-board price increase on most higher end bike imports from Europe for 2004, including Merckx, Pinarello, etc so the increase on the price of the Luigino is no surprise. (The Shimano 10 spd DA prices have left some gasping, but the 2004 prices for Campy should finish you off, so wait for that as well!) As a result, the $2400 price is hardly a shock, although the real question is whether Pegoretti will continue to offer the Luigino in its 'original' form, meaning with the NOS Campy bits, or whether it will revert to simply another lugged bike with all-'modern' components. I guess we will have to see.

In the interim, I have a 2003 road version which rides very, very well and is well built and finished. My 2002 Luigino frameset is on the market since I need two like I need a spare whatever.
