Seth,

In your note on Jewish builders, you mention the Santa Cruz flea market. When I (re)visited Santa Cruz last summer, I headed down to my all time favorite bike shop: Sullivan's bike shop on Seabright Ave. Much to my disappointment, it was closed. Every trip I ever made to that shop was like a colossal Easter egg hunt. Old but beautiful frames hanging from the rafters, Bikes of every description parked on the floor, Nervex next to school girl bikes. Boxes of saddles, boxes of stuff, shelves of dusty old things, and customer access to everything. ( I'm getting to the flea market...).

I called some shops, and the consensus was that maybe the my best bet was the shop on the highway heading north to Davenport. They had a couple of hundred rusting bikes, but the only bike of interest was a Bianchi F/F not of my size. One shop owner mentioned the Santa Cruz flea market, but alas, it was already late Saturday afternoon, so I just headed back to the desert with no bicycle fix.

So tell me, on my next visit, is there a shop worth visiting, and what might I find at the flea market? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Hey Folks:
My take on this Jewish builders question is that bike builders in our world are perceived as being overwhelmingly Italian and other Western Europeans,so a Russian Jewish fancy bike builder is quite an unexpected novelty. We wonder;can we think of any others?
Well, now,a couple of years ago,a 16inch wheel tiny kid bike showed up at the Santa Cruz,CA flea market. It was strange in every shape and dimension. While some of us were goggling at it,some world-weary cosmopolitan wandered up and said right away that he recognised it as Greek.Completely blindsided me...So do we have any other reports of Way Off The Side manufacture?I personally have a set of pretty cool ZZR Polish cranks with small five screw chainwheel fastening(as in better than utility grade)
