A photo of a "Tommy Bar" pedal can be seen on the Speedplay Pedal virtual museum site, look for the Chater Lea pedal, c. 1940.

The pedal doesn't have wrench (spanner) flats; instead a tommy bar, otherwise known as a, uh, shaft, is inserted in the hole, and um, well, I think I better quit now. Jay Van De Velde Johnson Beach, CA

Mike,
A "Tommy Bar" is what Americans with a less-than-delicate
vocabulary would call a "Johnson Bar". What that has to do
with those pedals is another story. So I too will have to
defer to some British soul mate with a less-than-delicate
vocabulary.
