Wayne, et al: This was probably as long as drop bars were around, bike riders being an inventive lot. One would not change to a flat bar because one could turn it up for easy riding and swivel the bar back down for scorching. It was done during the Six-Days to let riders rest and ride easy during the off and non-spectator hours as they circled around on the flat to keep the marathon effect going. The '20's and '30's were the halcyon days of Sixes and I'm sure the amateurs picked up on it and it was cooool. But rest assured when the guys weren't tooling around, the bars were down and they rode like in a miss-and-out or devil take the hindmost. Ted Ernst Palos Verdes Estates, CA
