Subject: lowering gear ratio for Sturmey, was [CR]Late '70 Raleigh Sprite questions

Eugene Powell asked about lowering the gear ratios on a Raleigh 3-speed.

The cogs on the hub are easily changed, if you can find larger ones. Yours probably has an 18. The '53 Sturmey catalog lists both 20 and 22 tooth versions, at 1 sh 9 d each. I have a Fichtel & Sachs 22, and a S/A 20, so such do exist.

good luck!

Till we recover the Kish (the stolen bike of the previous message), Nikki wants to ride her almost new-late '70's Raleigh Sprite 3-spd to work. However, she'd like a lower gear (or 2) so.................

Does the Sachs 7-spd internal have a wider range, or just more gears than the Sturmey AW? What about the other 7-spd internals?

Were there chainring options available for the Raleigh Heron cottered cranks?

I know I'd have to change out the whole arm, but did they make different ring sizes?

Any other thoughts?
