I would say that your astute analysis is probably as good as any, particularly about the fact that Eddy's doing a time trial in the photo. Hard to tell the spoke count but I'd say 28 or less.

Here's a link to the series of photos (unfortunately they weren't captioned in the magazine) and it's fairly evident from the first image that Eddy is in the staging area for a time trial.
