Personally, I enjoy the way Brett Horton sets up his pedigree. He states clearly who and where and when and usualyy has a photograph for documentation. In collectables, that is probably the way to go.

As to pedigree and collectability in general: It is all supply and demand. Some people just go for the big guns while others couldn't be baited by Fausto Coppi's Bianchi if it had several bills pinned to it. For some people XTR is historic, others say cambio corsa. Brits dig Tom Simpson, Americans are patriotic about LeMond (and those other OT nincompoops), Italians love Adorno and everybody wants to have a slice of Eddy. Best pedigree is when you get it from the rider himself.

As to pedigree and collectability in particular: Quite regularly you read on eBay: ULTRA RARE!!!!!!!! 1985 Campagnolo Super Record Rear Derailleur, used. This part was produced in the tens of thousands, it is just not rare. Same as auctions that go: "This bike used to belong to someone who is really famous, but I'm not going to tell you, because that person might not like the publicity." Either the seller is a complete dolt, since pedigree multiplies the price, or he is full of hot air and doesn't want to be exposed by potential buyers asking the rider questions. Gregor Braun's Moser was on eBay two years ago. A lister bought it and I believe the price stayed under $1000. Gregor Braun is no slouch; he is multiple World and Olympic Champion, and I think that price does not do him credit. Now look at a lower tier french rider with a lesser palmares, who rode a bike which is equipped with nothing special (you see several bikes like this go away on eBay every day for under $400), and you ask about pedigree and collectability. I would prefer a nicer bike that was owned by no one special.
