To start off the conversation on this interesting topic is to see when domestic/overseas restrictions on chroming occurred for environmental considerations. The costs increase rather dramatically in concordance with the legislation here in the US. I believe either this or the framebuilding list was discussing nickel plating as a currently more cost effective solution than chrome.
I eliminated most of my anodizing for powder coating primarily because of the scale that I need would place me in a tenuous position environmentally once i had decided to take aluminum finishing in house. On a personal level, environmental concerns are always paramount and in this case resulted in a finish that allowed far more options and greater
durability.
