well to correct you the Stronglight 49d crankset actually was introduced in 1934-35. That is the design that stronglight used for many decades with minor changes to the milling and such. the "d" refers to Dural, aluminum. they also had a Model 49A, which where steel cotterless arms. I don't know if the early incarnation of the 49ds were called something like the mod 34 or something, as the model numbers by some manufactures used to refer to the year they were introduced- Mafac top 63(1963), Simplex record 60(1960).

Stronglight mod 57, was introduced in 1957. stronglight super competition 63(1963). but the kicker is the mod. 93, came out in 1968-69, you do the math on that one. I think the Mod 54 steel cottered crankset was introduced in 1954.

any high end bike at the time, would have had alloy cotterless cranks. and to further that, any bike that would have come with the steel Campagnolo seatpost, could have originally had the 1st version campy cranks, as they were availible at that time. would not have had steel cottered cranks, unless the originally rider was a "horse" and was scared of the idea of breaking cranks.

my 2 since ralph philadelphia, PA

You can search on the web for photos and I would recommend Bulgier.net as a source. Not certain if they are there, but there is plenty of information out there. Bruce
