John, nothing wrong with your cranks. I have a pair of three-arm TA cranks (TA Professional?) off an old Raleigh Competition with this type of arrangement, and I understand it was commmon on CycloTourist as well at one time. I assume the purpose was to keep dirt out of the threads, though I don't know why this would be perceived as a problem with crankarm pedal threads. Perhaps Hilary or someone can tell us when TA began drilling through the arms for the pedal thread.
