When I was in college in San Luis Obispo our common Friday activity was to take the train to Santa Cruz, hang out a bit with the hippies downtown, then ride back down south to get back to school by Sunday evening. Alternately, we'd ride to Santa Barbara and take the train back. Believe me, you don't want to ride north on the coast.
