Goo Gone or Goof Off both work well on adhesives, and some oils, without damaging most paints (always check first in an inconspicuous area, of course. Just tonight I was using Simple Green to clean a mucky item, and discovered it would not move some adhesive that was hidden inder dried grease. A few dabs with Goo Gone on a cloth wiped it right away.
