Memories: Their first stems had an scarey deep stress riser on the back of the handlebar clamp and an extremely small section for the forward extension. I used to take a round file and put a large radius where there was a sharp notch. But the stems were flexy. I thought the bars were fine.

In the 80s Mavic wanted all the bike shop employees riding Mavic so they had really deep discounted employee purchase. Mavic wanted the employees to convert their customers to Mavic too, so we were all on "Tout Mavic" bikes... Vitus 979, Vitus Carbone 3, 7 & 9, Curtlo, Landshark, you name it.

A friend rode across his lawn to meet us, the clamp broke, his bars rotated down, and he took a header on the soft grass. Good timing since we were headed up to Mt. Baldy!
