Hi, I have a pair of Wheelsmith wheels that I had made up by them about 1974-5 while they were at their first building on Alma St. in Palo Alto, and they used Chrome double butted spokes and a set of high flange Campy hubs with Fiamme rims. They were stunning to ride in the sunlight. I've never seen chrome spokes since. Sounds to me like what you're really asking is, "Why are some people famous and other equally talented people not?"

No. This was the question: "Are their wheels actually better than other good wheel builders and , if so, how?"

Nothing to do with fame or notoriety. Are their wheels betters than other good wheel builders or aren't they? If so, why? Nothing to "hash" out that I can see.
