Can anyone explain exactly what these are and exactly why they would allegedly work with traditional pedals (with toeclips) and not modern clipless ones? (see comments added by seller after start of auction)

These are reverse-threaded arms for the front of a tandem....

S means left-hand pedal threads, and D means right-hand pedal threads.
