The seller says the drive arm, normally the right arm, is marked S = sinistre = left and the non-drive arm is marked D which is the abbreviation for the Italian word for right. This would mean the arms were designed to be reversed, which, as he says, means they are probably the front arms for a tandem. This means they are not Pista (track) cranks at all, and he should change the title of the item. As to the pedals, he is saying you can use these for track by mounting the "S" = left arm on the right. The trouble is, a left crank arm will have left hand pedal thread and if you mount it on the right, it still requires a left-hand threaded pedal, meaning one designed to be the left pedal. With a modern clipless pedal, a left pedal mounted on the right side of the bike would point backward. But many old conventional pedals were symetrical, meaning the front was the same as the back (this is not true if the tab to level the pedal with the toe is cast into the cage plate, though). Thus, one could install a conventional left pedal on the right side, switch the toe clip the the other side of the pedal, and it would work - sort of. But there is a big problem with this. Left pedals are left-hand threaded and right pedals are right-hand threaded because in that way the pedaling forces will tend to tighten the pedal in the crank, rather than loosen it. If you install a left-hand threaded left pedal on the right side of the bike, the pedaling forces will tend to loosen the pedal. No way I would ever try this for an actual track bike, with the high pedal forces generated in say, match sprints. You might get away with using it on a single-speed road bike, if you use lots of loctite and carry a pedal wrench in case the pedals work loose. Personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle. I wouldn't bid on this unless I actually intended to use it on a tandem

All,

wrt to http://ebay.com/<blah>

Can anyone explain exactly what these are and exactly why they would allegedly work with traditional pedals (with toeclips) and not modern clipless ones? (see comments added by seller after start of auction)
