I've seen the following on more than one bike:

One of my '55 Gillotts has a complete Campagnolo down tube shifter clamp brazed to the down tube (the ends of the clamp with the ears for the nut and bolt are loped off and the ends are filed to a 45° point).

What's the dang deal with that? How come???? The braze-on shifter bosses were available since 1951!
