Subject: [CR]Charlie Gaul's chainset.

Looking at Brett's photo, it is the same combination of components shown on Charly's 1958 Td F Learco Guerra drawn by Daniel Rebour. See page 26. Rebours attention to detail shows the LH crank with a flute in the back but not at the front. The only examples of this I know is by Magistroni. I have a 5 pin steel cottered type , flat on the outside with the 'Circus tent' logo. The back side is fluted. I have a 3 arm steel cottered type, known to be original from an Armstrong Pro Road no later than 1954. This is fluted on the outside, not on the back, much like a Stronglight. The cutouts in the arms are smaller than the ones on Charly's '58 bike but I believe his to be Magistroni. The weight wenies had been busy? The adapter ring - well, I just looked in the chainset section of 'Le Monde De Daniel Rebour' (Chuck's reprint) and on page 150 is Charly's cranks and 'Magistroni' written in the description. The rest is in Japanese! On page 26 the letters TA appear in the Japanese text so there we have it. Magistroni cranks, TA rings but who's is the mysterious and obviously very rare adapter ring?
