The use of 1/2" pitch roller chains goes back to at least 1905 from catalogs I have seen and probably earlier. It was just a preference thing for over 50 years on single speed bikes.

Diamond of the US also made excellent chain, Great Notch, NJ The teens era catalog I have call 1/2" chain the "English Chain" Diamond still produces their 1" roller chain Cross still make chain---do they make bicycle chain? sam lingo,pleasanton tx
