Wow, you would have thought I'd asked, "Who's Gay?" for all the private emails I got in response to my email about poseurs. Here are two stories from these emails (anon by design) :

==== anonymous email about poseurs #1 ====

I did hear a story about a young Greg LeMond attending a training ride in my area shortly after he took the World Championship. He came up on another fellow in the ride wearing a rainbow jersey, looked him up and down, and said, "World champion, huh?" The poor guy saw who was talking to him and was so humiliated he dropped out of the pack and went back to the parking lot. Sometimes a poseur just can't get any respect.

==== anonymous email about poseurs #2 ====

I'm with you; some people have too-thin skin. The jersey was great. I loved trying to be the anti-poseur. My fondest memory was being on my 10-speed in rural France with racks and saddlebags, wearing my cutoffs and tennies, and catching up to a French rider in stretchy jersey out imagining he'd broken away from the pack. He was mortified to be caught by someone like me, but ended up being the nicest guy, helping me find a place to camp on a farm. He was no racer, let's put it that way.
