"Favorite" may be pushing it, but an interesting book often overlooked among the classier manuals and coffee table books is one published in 1973: "Glenn's Complete Bicycle Manual" by Clarence W Coles and Harold T Glenn. Paper cover, 8.5 x 11 inches, 339 pages.

Sections on bicycle Selection, Maintenance and Repair. Filled with black and white photos and exploded diagrams showing step by step procedures for everything from overhauling Ashtabula cranks or Campy derailleurs to rebuilding Sturmey-Archer hubs. Glenn had published dozens of tune-up and maintenance manuals for many foreign cars and each of the repair or maintenance procedures in this book were approached in much in the same way you might find for rebuilding a Weber 4-barrel carburetor. Some dated info but for the most part still solid technical info for any budding vintage bike mechanic. So, you want to re-build a freewheel?... Well, here you go.

And you just have to love the photos of the mature, gray haired, bike technician always wearing an immaculate white lab coat and a neck tie while working with filthy bike components.

These are great finds in your local used book stores and occasionally pop up on eBay. Nothing fancy, so prices are usually quite low.
